What changes as you step up?
Technology changes how a detector handles different targets and ground. It does not create a universal depth guarantee.
Single-frequency VLF
A focused, approachable platform for parks, fields, dry sand and fresh water. Setup is straightforward and value is strong.
Simultaneous multi-frequency
Processes multiple frequencies together for broad target response and more stable behaviour when ground or wet-salt conditions change.
Selectable & premium multi-frequency
Adds selectable single frequencies and finer control for experienced users who want to tune a detector to a particular target or site.
Match the detector to the conditions you will actually search.
Parks and fields
Prioritise easy target identification, comfortable weight and useful discrimination. A capable single-frequency VLF can be an excellent first detector on uncomplicated ground.
Wet salt and surf
Conductive wet salt can challenge a single-frequency detector. Simultaneous multi-frequency is generally the stronger all-round starting point; use the underwater route for specialist water hunting.
Natural gold
Some premium all-round detectors include gold-capable modes, but prospecting for small nuggets in mineralised ground is a specialist task. Compare dedicated gold detectors before deciding.
Mineralised soil
Ground balance, frequency choice, recovery settings and coil control matter. More controls can help an experienced user adapt, but careful setup remains essential.
Questions people ask before choosing
How deep can a metal detector find something?
There is no honest universal depth figure. Target size, metal, orientation, soil mineralisation, moisture, coil size, settings and sweep technique all change the result. Compare capability and suitability, not unsupported depth promises.
Do I need simultaneous multi-frequency for the beach?
It is usually the safer choice for wet salt because it is designed to handle changing conductive conditions more effectively. Dry sand and freshwater are less demanding, while regular submersion also requires the right waterproof rating.
Can an all-round detector find natural gold?
Selected premium models can prospect, but small natural gold in strongly mineralised ground often rewards a dedicated gold detector. Use the gold category if that is your main purpose.
Which detector is best for a beginner?
The best first detector is one that suits your actual ground, feels manageable and gives you room to learn. The FINDX Pro, Simplex and Score families cover different budgets and technologies; the Finder narrows the choice without assuming the most expensive model is automatically best.
